MOOT COURT ASSOCIATION
The college conducts periodical Moot courts and mock trials for the practical training of law students. The moot courts association organize an annual inter university moot courts. Competition for law students from all over the country. The winners are awarded trophies and individual’s prizes. They are likely to be invited for Jessup international law moot courts competitions organized annually at Washington D.C (USA) by the American society of international law. There is also a proposal to organize Asian moot courts competition.
The affairs of the association shall be managed by an executive committee of student’s representative who are nominated by Head of institution. The staff advisor may be consulted, while nominating the students representative.
Funds of the association consists mainly of fees paid at the prescribed rate by the government per student, the grant from the government and ant amount which may be released by bringing out souvenir, etc. to commemorate international moot courts competition.
The moot society (Tamil) conducts and annual inter collegiate moot courts competition in Tamil between law colleges in Tamilnadu and Pondicherry. This second moot courts competition in Tamil may be conducted by students.
CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES OF THE COLLEGE
With a view to encourage the maximum participation of the maximum number of students in all these activities and in order to cultivate healthy corporate life consistent with norms of academic discipline and tradition of a professional law school. The following rules are formulated for which annual fees are compulsorily collected from every student of the college, while the remaining societies / associations are free to frame their own rules for their working, they are advised to follow the norms set out below. In any case they are also subject to the overall control of the principal and they shall invariably have to get the prior permission of the principal for all their activities. No student shall collect any amount from outsiders and strict disciplinary action would be taken if the college name is misused on any account.
The principal will be ex officio chairman of all the students’ welfare associations.
NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME
With a view to promote social consciousness and a sense of responsibility as a sense of discipline and dignity of labour among college students, the programme of national service scheme is imparted. The national service scheme is essentially educational programme and its main objective is education students and development of their personality through social service and community development. Emphasis is also made on programmes of rural reconstruction and activities aimed at improvement of conditions of the life of the economically and socially weaker sections of the community. Some of the activities of the national service scheme are-
1. Environmental, enrichment and conservation;
2. Health, family welfare and nutrition programme;
3. Improvement in the status of women;
4. Social service in welfare institutions;
5. production-oriented programmes;
6. Work during emergencies;
7. Education and recreation including adult education and pre-school education programmes;
8. Rendering legal aid, legal literacy, etc.
At the beginning of the academic year students shall enroll their names with N.S.S. programme officer of the college to become member of the nss programmme. A maximum of 100 students will be accommodated for regular activity and 50 students for special camp. The principal is the chairman of the N.S.S. advisory committee at the college level.
LEGAL AID CLINIC
The legal aid clinic discharged to combine the requirement of clinical education of the law student with need of social service to the weaker sections of the community. The clinic when fully developed may have four specialized divisions working under the direct supervision of lawyer and professors associated with the college. They are (a) legal services to the poor advice and l assistance to individual clients, (b) law enforcements assistance division, (c) legislative research support cell, and (d) pubic participation and education project.
The clinic, it is hoped will help make legal education in Pondicherry more socially useful, professionally relevant and intellectually challenging.
The legal aid wings of the clinic now functions in the law college premises under the supervision of teachers-in-charge of the legal aid clinic. Law students are closely associated with the clinic activities on a voluntary basis. Students who have served the clinic meritoriously and continuously throughout the year are awarded certificates for distinguished service. Final year students are given special credit for services to the clinic as part of practical training.
With the setting up the union territory of Pondicherry legal services authority, the legal aid clinic is expected to be more dynamic in rendering free legal aid to the poor.
LAW AND SOCIETY FORUM
This is another voluntary association of interested teacher and students for the purpose of study and research in law in the context of contemporary social, political and economic condition with a view to develop law as an effective instrument of social change and progress. The forum frames lit own rules and regulation and works under the direction of staff advisor. A student from m. l. class will be nominated to co-ordinate the activities under the guidance of a staff advisor.
SCHOLARS STUDY CIRCLE
This is a small group of selected students TEACHERS AND other scholars devoted to widening their areas of interest, perception and study by mutual exchanges and intensive discussion on variety of topics, legal and non-le3gal. The circle meets once in every fortnight. Students preparing for a competitive examination are encouraged to associate themselves with the study circle.
This association is mainly meant for creating a platform for discussion current topics in economics and other related matters affecting national economic and planning. The association will frame its own rules and regulations with a view to encourage discussion among the students and staff. The association would work under the guidance of a staff advisor.
STUDENT’S GUIDANCE BUREAU
With a view to assist the students of law know various opportunities available to them to improve this prosperity a student’s guidance bureau has been started. The bureau will be in-charge of staff-member nominated by the head of the institution that will maintain a liaison with the student’s community and furnish all the necessary information available at his source through the college notice board.
STUDENTS PLACEMENT BUREAU
With a view to assist the students of law in getting suitable employment/opportunity/position a student placement bureau has been started. The bureau will function under the guidance of a lecturer nominated by the head of the institution who will maintain a liaison between the entrepreneurs and students community. Two students wee=re selected by ‘ford’ and dynamic software solution ltd., (USA) have concluded campus interview during November 2006.
TAGORE CENTENARY CELEBRATIONS COMMITTEE ESSAY COMPETITION
The government of Pondicherry has constituted Tagore centenary celebration committee memorial fund with a view to conduct an essay competition every year at the collegiate relating to the life, works or ideals of shri rabindanth Tagore and award prizes one for boy and another for a girl selected on merit in the competition. The competition is open to all the students of various colleges’ viz., arts, science, technical and professional colleges in the union territory of Pondicherry including karaikal, mahe and yanam. The prizes shall be distributed annually on the college day of this institution (G.O.Ms. No. 132/83Edn./GLI, dated 7-3-1984).
MAHATAMA GANDHI ROLLING TROPHY
The LLM. Students of 2003-05 have3 instituted mahatma Gandhi rolling trophy with a view to conduct inter collegiate education competition in English and Tamil every year. The competition is open to all the students of various colleges’ arts science, technical and professional colleges in the union territory of Pondicherry including karaikal, mahe and yanam. Student undergoing courses through distance education/pg courses are not eligible to participate in the competition. Two trophies (winners and runners cup) for English and two trophies (winners and runners cup) for English and two trophies (winners and runners cup) for Tamil are instituted. The trophies shall be distributed on the college day function. The trophies shall be kept by the winning institution till 30th June and it shall be handed over to the principal on or before 1st July.
As a part of practical training for the final year student’s educational tour to legislative and judicial institution is arranged by this institution. A fixed amount for this purpose is sanctioned by the government of Pondicherry. Extra expenses are met by the individual student. A staff adviser nominated by the head of the institution will chalk out the tour programme.
The government of Pondicherry has instituted the scheme of extension lectures under which eminent professor of law, senior advocates and other dignitaries are invited to deliver lectures for the benefit of law students. This scheme is existing in this institution from its inception.
VISITING PROFESSORS SCHEME
Under this scheme approved by the government of Pondicherry, four professors are invited to deliver a series of lectures mainly for llama students. Usually two professors are invited every year, to deliver expert lectures on current topics of law. This scheme is existing in this institution from the academic year 1981-82 onwards.
Dr. AMBEDKAR CENTENARY LECTURE SERIES
Under this scheme, as approved by the government of Pondicherry an eminent academician of acknowledged jurist would be invited to deliver a series of lectures on a topic relating to dr. Ambedkar and his contribution to the Indian constitution. An honorarium of Rs. 5,000 would be paid to the invitee apart from 1 class to and fro railway fare and looking after boarding and lodging arrangements at Pondicherry. The manuscripts of the lecture are required to be given well in advance and the same would be printed and published by the institution.
The lectures series has been started from the academic year 1992-92 and the first series of lecture was delivered by Dr.N.R. madava menon, director, national school of i8ndia and the former principal of this institution. The second lecture was delivered by prof. ram singh, Allahabad University during 1993-94.
The third lecture was delivered by prof. a. lakshminath, principal, Dr. Ambedkar government law college, Andhra University. The fourth lecture was delivered by prof. c.g. raghavan, Nagpur University. The fifth lecture was delivered by shri dhairajsheel patil, senior advocate, satara. The sixth lecture was delivered by shri S.S. vishweshwariayya, dean, Law College, dharwad. The seventh lecture was delivered by Dr. N.L. mitra, national law school of i8ndia. The eighth lecture was delivered by prof. s.k. singh, professor of law, Kurushetra University. The ninth lecture was delivered by Dr.V.B. coutinho of Bangalore University. The thirteenth lecture was delivered by Dr.K. vikraman nair, director, school of Indian legal thought, M.G. University, kottayam. The institution has released a book on Ambedkar and Indian constitutions containing first six lecturers.
SILVER JUBILEE ENDOWMENT LECTURE SERIES ON ENVIRONMENTAL LAW
Government of Pondicherry has initiated an endowment lecture on environmental law as part of the of the silver jubilee celebrations of the college. An eminent professor of law or a senior advocate or a jurist who has done commendable work in the field of environment. The invitee is paid an honorarium of Rs. 5,000 apart this to and fro travel expenses and looking after his local hospitality at Pondicherry. The silver jubilee endowment lecture for the years 2005-2005 was delivered by Dr. (Ms.) P. Nagabosham, former vice-chancellor, Tamil nadu Dr. Ambedkar law university, Chennai.
